Hello Christie Cub Families-
WOW! It's hard to imagine that we are already in week 3! This year has started off great and the PE/Fitness teachers are so excited to see all returning cubs and new cubs here at Christie. Just a quick reminder to please be aware of your child's Specials Schedule. We want to ensure that all students maximize their specials time by wearing the appropriate shoes/attire. It is very important when your child has PE and Fitness that they come prepared with running shoes. This is a safety issue. Our goal in PE/Fitness is to increase students' heart rate so they are more prepared and focus when they return back to their academic setting. As always, please feel free to contact any of the coaches as we're always here to support you and your student(s).

FIELD DAY ....
Hey Christie Cub Families-
Field Day is QUICKLY approaching and we are in need of volunteers. Below is a link to sign up if you would like to volunteer. You can sign up to help in the morning, afternoon, or BOTH. Whatever time you sign up for, we'll need you at that station, not walking around with your child's class. In the morning, we'll have some 5th graders helping at many of the stations, so we will need the most help in the afternoon but still welcome volunteers for the morning time. On the sign up link, you'll see that we also need volunteers to help with the Snow Cone machine and Dunk Tank! All volunteers will be provided with pizza, chips and salsa, fruit, water, and tea. Volunteers lunch will be from 11-12. Thank you and please make sure you check in at the front office. You will be assigned a station and directed where to go. You'll also
receive a description of your station to help you better understand the activity. See below for the sign up link....

HealthyZone May Newsletter ...
Christie Cub Families-
As we close out the 2018-2019 school year, our focus within the Healthy Zone Program has been to "Create a Culture of Health." In the link below, you'll find information related to diabetes and exercise, comparisons of high-fructose corn syrup versus other added sugars, and information related to FitnessGram Reports. Please take a look at these articles as they contain excellent information. For parents who have students in grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th, students will be bringing home their personalized FitnessGram Report in their report card the last day of school. These reports focus on activities and skills that students worked on throughout PE and Fitness that ultimately lead to a healthier lifestyle. In Fitness, students were provided with a demo report to analyze. This is helpful for when they receive their personalized report, they can interpret the data and possibly make changes to better their own health. As always, the PE/Fitness coaches would like to wish every cub and their family a safe and happy summer. May you find activities and meals that provides for a healthier life style for all. Enjoy your summer! See you in August!!!

March Healthy Zone Newsletter ...
Hello Christie Families-
I can hardly believe that Spring Break is less than a week away. In all actuality, I feel like I blinked and January and February came and gone in a matter of seconds. Before you know, it will be the last day of the 2018-2019 school year. CRAZY!!! In this month's edition of the Healthy Zone Newsletter, we are still focusing on "Creating a Culture of Health." One of my favorite articles that hits home especially if you have kids of your own is called "Decrease Screen Time to Improve Overall Health and Vision." As crazy as it sounds, today's generation of kids have technology and devices at their fingertips. Because of this, children are spending a substantial amount of their daily time focused on a screen while their physical activity level continues to decrease. Therefore, early signs of childhood obesity and nearsightedness are on the rise. In order for students to establish a healthy lifestyle, it is highly recommended that they receive 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Let's help our children out by creating and establishing healthy goals while minimizing screen time.

October Healthy Zone Newsletter: Creating a Culture of Health
Hey Cubs in the October Healthy Zone Newsletter it's all about Creating a Culture of Health. Ms. Lagos (2nd grade teacher) and I (Coach O'Brian) had the privilege and opportunity to represent Christie Elementary by participating in this years orientation at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. It was super inspiring to learn ways to increase physical activity and improve healthy eating habits here at Christie. The statistics, on the other hand, were quite revealing regarding the number of childhood obesity as it continues to rise. We know that what are students are eating and their physical activity can and does play an important role on their learning within the classroom. Remember it takes us to model good habits and behaviors. Therefore, let's take a few extra minutes every day to walk a little more and add vegetables/fruits to our dinner meals and daily snacks.

Why Is Physical Activity Important?
We can at times become distracted by the daily chores of the house, work schedules that can be demanding, kids extracurricular activities, etc, that we often neglect our own personal health. Below is a link with some quick tips for increasing your physical activity. Also, don't forget to check out the new October Fitness Calendar. It has some excellent ways that you and your family can be physically active together. Students should be bringing their calendar home later this week.

Healthy Zone September Newsletter 2018-2019
In the September Healthy Zone Newsletter, it's all about creating a Culture of Health. This edition focuses on what defines a Healthy Zone School along with September being National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and Whole Grains Month. Childhood obesity is on the rise with roughly 13.7 million children and adolescents, ages 2-19 being affected by obesity. These are staggering numbers! Here at Christie we are trying a number of activities to help kids be active in PE and Fitness along with a quick exercise to kick start recess. However, kids need more than what's provided at school if we're going to change these numbers. Therefore, we encourage all Christie families to complete the monthly fitness calendars and/or encourage 60 minutes per day of physical activity when they get home. Research shows that only 37.4% of children actually participate in daily physical activity. Keep moving cubs!

RUNNING CLUB INFORMATION ....
Dear Christie Families-
This 2018-2019 school year students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of after school clubs. One in particular is the Running Club sponsored by Coach Reed. Students are encouraged to get a Running Club form from the coaches in the gym either before school, during their specials time, or after school. We will meet at 2:55 each day with the exception of Wednesdays. Students must have a form on file in order to participate. Our fabulous PTA purchased an awesome program for us to digital track how many miles students have run. This will allow us to help set goals for students to achieve. The Running Club is a great way for students to gain those extra miles. Keep moving cubs!

10 TIPS: BE AN ACTIVE FAMILY
Hey Christie Families-
Check out the link below for some great tips on ways that you can be active together as a family. Remember that we are models for our children. Therefore, what better way to model an active lifestyle than by doing it together as a family. Also, all cubs should be bringing home the September Fitness Calendar. This is another great option for families to get active together. Students are encouraged to complete each box with a parent initial indicating completion. Then at the end of the month, students will turn the completed form to their fitness teachers. All completed forms will receive a PAWS card and students name will go into a drawing for equipment prizes at the end of each nine weeks. We appreciate the support from all Christie families as this is the year to create new healthy habits.
