12 DAYS of FITNESS

Tis the season to create healthier habits!  Each day complete a different activity.  Enjoy!

Christie Families-
Below is the last and final fitness calendar of this year!  Kinda crazy to think about.  Remember that each individual box needs a parent initial along with a parent signature at the end to ensure that all activities were indeed completed before being turned in.  I am so grateful to all students who have been actively participating and turning their calendars into either Coach Handyside or myself.  Remember to keep moving!

November Fitness Calendar ....

Dear Christie Families-
November is here!  Below is the fitness calendar that will be going home this week.  Just a reminder that this is completely optional but highly encouraged.  The purpose of the monthly fitness calendars is to encourage all cubs to be active outside of school for at least 60 minutes a day.  Statistics show that 46% of children and adolescents are either overweight or obese.  With such staggering statistics, we want to encourage all cubs and their family members to make healthy choices to promote a healthier lifestyle.  As a Healthy Zone School In-Training, our job as PE/Fitness teachers to to educate and communicate to our staff, students, and community members ways that we can make healthier choices so we all win!  -- keep moving cubs and enjoy the November Fitness Calendar!

PE/Fitness Fundraiser .....

Dear Christie Cubs-
Want to help PE/Fitness raise money to purchase new equipment while having FUN at the same time?!?!  From now until Friday, December 1st, Coach O'Brian will be selling Speed Stack sets in the Fitness room from 7:35am-8:00am.  There will be NO sells Wednesday, October 25-Friday, October 27th as Coach O'Brian will be at 5th grade camp.  Speed Stacking is an exciting sport where students stack and unstack 12-specially designed cups while activating both sides of the body and brain.  One of our goals, as PE/Fitness teachers, is to promote activity at home through positive alternatives to computer, television and video game screen time.  Sport Stacking is a unique, fun and simple activity that motivates kids to get up and move.  If you would like to purchase a set for your child for an upcoming holiday, please contact Coach O'Brian at 469-752-0880 or by email at angela.obrian@pisd.edu.  Thanks and keep moving!

Set of 12 cups - $20

October News

October has proven to begin itself in a very busy way!  This month in PE/Fitness we are beginning to increase our cardiovascular endurance, wrap up our beginning of the year FitnessGram testing, teach the proper technique of throwing a frisbee while playing frisbee golf, build teamwork and encouragement with obstacles on the rock wall, as well as get our 5th graders geared up for Collin County Adventure Camp through camp like activities.

Typically the month of October can really be summed up in one word....SUGAR!  With that beloved by many October holiday quickly approaching, we wanted to take the time to remind everyone that with candy comes carbohydrates.  Please check out the October Healthy Zone Newsletter link below to read up on the truth about carbohydrates as well as some youth fit tips!

Finally, I want to send a BIG thank you to the dozens of families who have completed their September Fitness Calendar and returned it signed to their fitness teacher.  It is thrilling to see students being active outside of school and encouraging their parents to join in on some active fun. Please see the October Fitness Calendar below.  It arrived home with your child early this week. Remember.....keep moving cubs!

Healthy Zone School

Christie Cubs and Parents-
I am thrilled to announce that Christie has been selected to be a Healthy Zone School!  This is super exciting news for our school as it provides additional funding resources, educational opportunities for coaches and important health tips for parents, students, and staff members.  The Healthy Zone School Recognition Program was developed by United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and The Cooper Institute in 2011, and supports and recognizes schools in North Texas that are fighting the childhood obesity epidemic and creating healthy school environments. The program has shown to be effective in improving the healthy behaviors of schools, and in turn, a positive impact on student health outcomes has been observed.  The Healthy Zone School Recognition Program expanded to 141 schools in the 2016-2017 school year and impacted more than 96,000 local students.  This school year, 2017-2018, the Healthy Zone School Recognition Program added 20 new schools with Christie being one of the 20 selected.  As we begin to wrap our brain around this incredible opportunity, please check out the September Newsletter below from the Healthy Zone School Program.

BLUEBERRY DAY

Thursday, September 14th we began a new adventure here at Christie that starts with our amazing cafeteria staff.  We celebrated BLUEBERRY DAY!  Each month we will highlight a fruit or vegetable.  During each grade level's fitness class, we will discuss the benefits to the month's fruit/vegetable.  Then on a selected day, students will all have the opportunity to sample that month's fruit/vegetable during their lunch time.  We hope that this will encourage students to try new healthy foods as they learn about their benefits!

Spooner Boards in Fitness ....

This week in fitness, students will be introduced to the ultimate surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding piece of equipment called Spooner Boards.  They are incredibly versatile and perfect to improve core strength and stability, leg strength, balance, coordination, and gross motor skills.  The Spooner Boards are also an awesome fitness board for adults.  Whether you're twisting, balancing, or just rocking at your standing desk position everyone can enjoy the fun.  Surfin the surface with Spooner Boards!

SAFETY is the KEY ....

This week in PE/Fitness our focus continues to be about the safety of others while maintaining personal space.  Therefore, we have been playing two noodle games in PE called "Statue of Liberty" and "Crabby Patty."  In both activities, students must move about the gym court in a safe manner yet balancing a bean bag on the top or end of a noodle.  The challenging aspect of this game comes when other classmates try and knock the bean bag off your noodle while still maintaining balance of their own.  In fitness, we've been focusing on Playground Safety Rules as well as Bicycle Safety Rules.

CAREER DAY ...

Dear Parents,
Career Day is rapidly approaching and we need YOUR experiences! Whether you are a nurse, mechanic, astronaut, custodian or business owner- we need you!
We are looking for a variety of people interested in spending a day talking to our students about their career. Many of our students are unaware of the career opportunities available to them and this is a fantastic way to provide them with first-hand knowledge of potential career paths. This is also a great way for you to get involved with Christie Elementary and make an impact on the students’ future. If you are not interested but know someone who is, please give them (or us) the necessary contact information. The 2017 Christie Elementary Career Day is May 19th from 8:30 – 3:15. Arrangements can be made for half-day participation.  Thank you in advance for your involvement!

(If you have any questions or would like to get further information please contact Jason Ramos at jason.ramos@pisd.edu or Dee Adams at dee.adams@pisd.edu)
